Lullaby and Goodnight

I was very good today, I went to the Cancer Research charity shop and took a carrier bag full of books in!  It didn't stop me buying one book in replacement though, lol.  This book was a bargain though, as of course everything I ever seem to buy from these shops is.  It was a book from the 1960's with the words and music to nursery ryhmes and other children's tunes called 'My First Sing-A-Song Book'.  What I like about this one is it has lovely vintage images illustrating the songs.

There is a lullaby section with this picture:
and it had a very famous tune called 'Cradle Song' which was written by Brahms that I remember singing to my baby (who is now 10!) at bedtime:

And on the front and back inside covers, there is this lovely illustration of a children's park.  This was the type of park I used to go on when I was little:
I remember that climbing frame and seesaw!

This is the book:
Costing me just 50p!   Memories? Priceless!

I also got these 'trainer wings!'
Which are embossed! I will be doing something artistic with them...
But not this! lol.  These were just 35p!

Tonight I also inked the edges of my altered book:
Just need to start thinking about a title and theme now...

Thanks for reading,

Sensational 70's

I was a teenager in the 1970's and I still have a great fondness for the era, maybe you have for the decade that you were in your teens?

As you may know, I'm still at the planning stage (take that to mean procrastinating) for scrapbooking my life for my children and I'm relishing the idea of scrapping the 1970's.

I have a bit of a collection and even bought a few dolls clothes today from a charity shop.  They are, ahem, awful! Just look at those patterns! They were handmade clothes that someone must have made for their little girl or grandchild:

(Plus a few other bits and bobs - this is just a very small selection of my collection). Also did you spot those 'lovely' pink knickers! lol:
Made for a bigger doll than the others.

I also still have some vinyl records of hits from the 1970's - our record player worked up until very recently.
These are the records in their 70's themed sleeves:
Yep, I'm going to enjoy documenting this very interesting, but seemingly tasteless (when looked back on), era of my youth.

I also made a 'Thank You' card for one of my son's teachers tonight:
Not sure I like it, too 'pretty' for my taste, but it suits its purpose..

Thanks for stopping by,

Spread a Little Happiness

After I made the picture yesterday (and redid it today!) it occurred to me what a great idea making pictures for yourself or other people is.  It can also make an extremely good moneysaving present!   That frame I got yesterday was only 50p, so they really don't have to cost much at all.

There are so many different things you could put in them too.  While I was clearing out our attic I found a pile of frames that I've accumulated and in one of them I found this lovely piece of writing that had been written by my husband when he was only about 5 years old!

It says on it:
My Records

(Ignoring the numbers down the side) I have 4 records 1 is Rupert and the Fire Bird and The Jungle Book and TV Cartoon Themes and The Owl and the Pussycat and Run Rabbit Run and I took it to school to play it on the School Record Player in the hall.  We did Musical Movement.

I like drawing aeroplanes best. Big aeroplanes fly fast in the air.

...and on the back are some handrawn pictures of dragons!:

My two little boys loved seeing the writing and drawings their daddy had done about 40 years ago!

It all depends on what type of things you may have but it made me think..  What other artefacts/bits of history could we put on display in frames?  Interesting things that we have from our pasts that tell a story, old letters that spoke of what life was like then... I've still got some pen pal letters from my teenage years, they may have bits in them that reveal to my sons what life was like in the 1970's....

But don't keep them to yourself! Put them on display (scan or take another photo of them if you want), let others see a part of you they don't normally!  Also, don't forget to give this sort of thing as gifts for Birthdays and Christmas, maybe to your siblings or parents.  If you present it nicely I can bet they'll appreciate it much more than something you've just plucked off a gift shop shelf.

Have a great weekend,

Nostalgic cassettes

Tonight I have been making a birthday card for my younger brother, who's birthday is on Tuesday - yikes! Why do I always leave them until the last minute?  I'm too trusting of the Post Office, which is not necessarily a good idea.

Anyway, to get onto the card. Here it is:

When we were growing up, in the, ahem, 1960's/70's, we used to record music from our record players and the radio (especially the Top 40) onto cassette tapes. My music taste tended to be into the latest pop like Abba, The Osmonds or the Sweet and my brother was into 'hard' rock music like Motorhead and AC/DC.  Anyway, I used to have such nice writing, that he paid me to write on the inlay cards (the packaging around the tapes) on all of his cassette cards - and he had hundreds!  So we have this in common, and I still have some tapes (loads in fact) in my attic so I dug them out to make this card.

I put the cassettes onto my light box (handmade by my husband!) and photographed them and then played with the images using Picnik:

(I got the original idea from a similar card I have seen in Paperchase)

While I was up in the attic, I also found this old 1970's scrapbook that my sister was going to chuck out.  It has lots of songwords to songs from the 1970's, I love it!:

I also love doing nostalgic projects! :-)
